Born on May 16 1908, Muhammad Roem was an Indonesian diplomat and statesman who played an important role in Indonesia’s struggle for independence.
He is famous as the leader of the Indonesian delegation in negotiations with the Dutch which resulted in the Roem-Royen Agreement in 1949.
Background and Early Career of Muhammad Roem
Born in Parakan, Temanggung, Central Java, on May 16 1908. He joined the Indonesian national movement from a young age.
Apart from that, he was also a member of the Dutch East Indies Volksraad (People’s Council) in 1935. And became chairman of the Masjumi Party in 1946.
Role in the Roem-Royen Agreement
Muhamad Roem was appointed as head of the Indonesian delegation in negotiations with the Dutch in Jakarta in 1949.
He succeeded in reaching an agreement with the Dutch in the Roem-Royen Agreement, which paved the way for the Round Table Conference (KMB) and recognition of Indonesian sovereignty.
Apart from that, he is also known as an accomplished diplomat and is able to negotiate well, even in difficult situations.
Career After Independence
- Became Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1950-1951.
- Became Indonesian Ambassador to the United States in 1953-1956.
- Became a member of the People’s Representative Council (DPR) in 1956-1959.

- Indonesian National Hero (1963).
- Bintang Mahaputera Adipradana (2019).
Mohammad Roem died on July 30 1980 in Jakarta and was one of the important figures in the history of Indonesian independence.
He is remembered as an accomplished diplomat and statesman who was highly dedicated to the nation and state. His role in the Roem-Royen Agreement was one of his most historic contributions to Indonesia.
